Meet The Doctors
Dr. Richard Schamerloh
Dr. Schamerloh joined the practice of Doctors C. William Trubey, Sandra Jones Hullinger and Dawn Gutwein Kazmierzak in 1993. He provides adult and pediatric eye care, advanced contact lens fitting, manages ocular conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, and provides low vision rehabilitation services.
Dr. Schamerloh served several years as adjunct faculty with the Indiana University School of Optometry at the Indianapolis Eye Care Center, mentoring optometry students in a clinical setting. He also served as a consultant in the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, both at the Marion and Fort Wayne campuses.
He has served as a consultant for EMR Logic/ActivEHR, assisting in the development of an optometric electronic health record.
Locally, Dr. Schamerloh has assisted in providing free screenings in area elementary schools and health fairs. He is also a provider for InfantSee, a program that provides free eye examinations for infants six months to one year of age. He also participates in Vision USA, a program that provides eye care and eye wear to low income Hoosiers.
Internationally, Dr. Schamerloh has participated in numerous eye care missions to Comayagua, Honduras, following the footsteps of his predecessor, Dr. C. William Trubey.
Dr. Schamerloh served as President of the Indiana Optometric Association (2009-2010). He has also served as President of the Northeast Indiana Optometric Society, and Northeast Trustee of the Indiana Optometric Associations. He remains involved with the state association as an advisor on issues pertaining to healthcare reform.
Dr. Schamerloh has been an Examiner and Section Chief for the National Board of Optometry at numerous sites throughout the country.
Dr. Richard Schamerloh is a 1992 graduate of the Indiana University School of Optometry following his undergraduate degree in Biology at Indiana University, Bloomington.
He was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Fraternity, and served as an associate instructor in both ocular physiology and histology at the optometry school. He graduated with honors, and was the recipient of the 1992 Fison’s Award for Clinical Excellence.
He completed a hospital-based post-graduate residency in ocular disease and vision rehabilitation at the Westside Veterans Administration Medical Center (Chicago) and the Hines VAMC.
In 1992 Dr. Schamerloh earned the distinction of Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). He is also board certified by the American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry.
Professional memberships and affiliations include the American Optometric Association, Indiana Optometric Association, the Northeast Indiana Optometric Society, and the Indiana Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry.
With his wife, Sara, also an optometrist (on staff at the Fort Wayne VA Medical Center), they enjoy travel, music, IU sports, Colts football, genealogy, gardening and landscaping.
Dr. Ryan Gustus
Dr. Gustus began as an associate doctor of Eyecare Associates in 2011 and became partner in 2012. He provides adult and pediatric eye care, contact lens fittings, and manages ocular conditions which include glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. He is board certified by the American Board of Medical Optometry. He has lectured and presented at several national conferences for the profession, including the American Academy of Optometry, American Optometric Association, and Southeastern Council of Optometrists. While in optometry school, Dr. Gustus was a research associate in an advanced retinal imaging lab and was coauthor on several publications and posters during his time there.
Locally, Dr. Gustus provides free vision screenings in area schools for children. He is also a provider for InfantSee, a non-profit organization that provides free eye examinations to infants six months to one-year of age. He has also volunteered for the Indiana Special Olympics, and provided vision screenings for children with special needs in Kentucky. He recently returned to Indiana University as a guest speaker for the Optometric Private Practice Club, an organization Dr. Gustus founded as a student that promotes independent optometry.
After completing his undergraduate studies at the Indiana University, Dr. Gustus attended Indiana University School of Optometry where he received his Doctorate of Optometry in 2011. He received his Bachelor of Science in Optometry in 2008 and served as an Assistant Instructor in Geometric Optics for two years. Dr. Gustus completed his postgraduate residency in Ocular Disease and Primary Care at the Fort Wayne, Indiana VA Hospital in 2012.
Dr. Gustus is a member of the Indiana Optometric Association and American Academy of Optometry.
Dr. Gustus enjoys spending time with his wife, Anne, and three daughters, Madeleine, Audrey, and Olivia.
Dr. Jill Roth (Liechty)
Dr. Roth joined Eyecare Associates as an associate doctor in 2013. She provides comprehensive eye examinations, contact lens fittings, and advanced eye health and optical services for all ages. She also sees patients at the Fort Wayne Glaucoma Center for glaucoma and cataract evaluations.
Dr. Roth is board certified by the American Board of Medical Optometry. She has lectured at several conferences including the American Academy of Optometry and American Optometric Association. Dr. Roth has been actively involved in optometric legislation and advocacy, and has traveled to Washington DC for several years to participate in the lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill.
Dr. Roth provides vision and eye health screenings within the surrounding area of Bluffton and Fort Wayne. She is also a provider for InfantSee, a non-profit organization that provides free eye examinations to infants six months to one-year of age. She is actively involved in Special Olympics, Vision Walk, and the National MS society. In addition, Dr. Roth has dedicated her time participating in two mission trips in Honduras and the Caribbean island of St. Vincent.
Dr. Roth graduated with honors from Indiana University in 2008, and went on to earn her Doctorate of Optometry degree from Indiana University in 2012, graduating in the top of her class. She served as an Assistant Instructor for Geometric and Visual Optics for two years, and also participated in a dry eye research lab, where she had the opportunity to present her findings at the national American Academy of Optometry conference. Dr. Roth continued her optometric training and completed a hospital-based residency in ocular disease and primary care at the Fort Wayne VA Medical Center in 2013.
Dr. Roth is a member of the Indiana Optometric Association, American Optometric Association, the American Academy of Optometry, and Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Society.
Dr. Roth has followed in the footsteps of her grandfather, who was a well-known optometrist that served the Fort Wayne and Berne area. In her free time, Dr. Roth enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband Zach, gardening, and beekeeping. She is also an avid Colts and IU fan!
