Doctor of Optometry

Dr. Richard Schamerloh, senior partner and Decatur native, has been with Eyecare Associates since 1993.    He provides comprehensive care to patients of all ages, with a special interest in advanced contact lens fitting and the management of a wide variety of ocular diseases.  


Education

Dr. Schamerloh graduated with honors from Indiana University in Bloomington, receiving a his undergraduate degree in Biology in 1987 and his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1992.   While in Optometry school, he served as an associate instructor in the Ocular Physiology and Histology courses.  Following graduation, he completed  a one year post-graduate residency in Ocular Disease at the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Hospital in Chicago, and went on to serve as adjunct faculty with the Indiana University School of Optometry, precepting students at the Indianapolis Eye Care Center.  

He is a Fellow of The American Academy of Optometry and is board certified by the American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry.


Volunteerism

Dr. Schamerloh serves on the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and has been actively involved with the Roanoke Farmer’s Market.   Additionally, he served on the Steering Committee for the Roanoke Comprehensive Plan in 2021-2022.
 

For over 30 years, Dr. Schamerloh has provided vision screenings at community health fairs and local  elementary schools.  Internationally,  he has participated in numerous Lion’s Club sponsored eye care missions to Comayagua Honduras, following the footsteps of his predecessor, Dr. C. William Trubey.  
 

Within the profession of Optometry, Dr. Schamerloh served as examiner and senior examiner for the National Board of Examiners at numerous sites throughout the country. 
 

He also served at all levels within the Indiana Optometric Association, culminating with his presidency in 2009-2010.  
 

In 2021, the Indiana Optometric Association named Dr. Schamerloh “Optometrist of the Year”, in honor of his many contributions to the profession and his service on behalf of the visual welfare of the public.
 

Associations/Memberships

Dr. Schamerloh is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Indiana Optometric Association, the Northeast Indiana Optometric Society, and the American Academy of Optometry.  
 

Personal

Dr. Schamerloh, together with his wife Sara, also an optometrist (formerly with the Fort Wayne VA Medical Center), enjoy travel, hiking, music, IU sports, Colts football, genealogy, gardening and landscaping.
